Donations to the Red Cross are tax-deductible and go a long way in helping people rebuild their lives. The Houston chapter of the American Red Cross dates back 89 years, when Jesse H. Jones first collected $250,000 through a fundraiser for the War Fund Drive in 1917. The American Red Cross in Washington appointed him director of military relief and he and his wife Mary Gibbs Jones went on to found the Houston Red Cross. It now has multiple offices within the city and conducts a number of programs that help people deal with some of the unexpected vagaries of life. The life-saving activities of organizations like The Houston Charity Center and the Houston Red Cross are critical to the lives of disaster-struck people and underprivileged families.
